Plot synopsis:

Eyeshield 21 revolves around a physically unassuming and non-assertive boy named Sena Kobayakawa who enters the high school of his choice, Deimon Private Senior High School where his childhood friend Mamori Anezaki one year older than Sena, already attends. His only remarkable physical abilities are his running speed, dodging techniques, and intense agility, the result of a school life spent complying with the demands of bullies. His abilities quickly catch the eye of the high school's American football team captain Yoichi Hiruma who forces Sena to join the team as the running back. To protect his identity (on the premise that other school sports teams will try to recruit Sena upon discovering his athletic skill) Sena is forced to publicly assume the role of team manager, and enter the field wearing a helmet equipped with a green-tinted eyeshield in order to hide his features under the pseudonym of "Eyeshield 21." The makeshift team initially takes part in the Spring football tournament hoping to win with through the strength of their new "secret weapon."

Main characters:

Sena Kobayakawa
Due to his diminutive stature and weak outward appearance, Sena was bullied by his peers in primary school, and always had to be rescued by his childhood friend, Mamori Anezaki.
Soon after entering senior high school, Sena was forced into playing American football by Yoichi Hiruma. Hiruma had seen Sena running away from the Hah brothers, who wanted to beat him up, and recognized Sena's running ability. To conceal his identity, Sena wears an eyeshield to cover the upper part of his face during practices and matches. Hiruma picked the alias "Eyeshield 21" after a player of the same name in the United States of America, so that Sena could have a secret identity and thus not be recruited by other athletic clubs.


Yoichi Hiruma
Hiruma is the mastermind, quarterback and de facto captain of Deimon's American Football club. He has pointy ears, sharp teeth, and looks and acts like a demon. His signature phrase is a loud "YA-HA", sometimes ended with a "TOUCHDOWN!". Hiruma is usually carrying some kind of firearm (usually concealed), including but not limited to flamethrowers, submachine guns, assault rifles or bazookas, which he fires mostly for intimidation. However, he has also used them for training purposes, such as shooting behind players to get them to run pass routes. As well as access to embarrassing information about his classmates, which he shamelessly uses to "convince" people to see things his way. Hiruma was the first person to recognize Sena Kobayakawa's talent for running and dodging. He also owns a very vicious dog named Cerberus (Keruberosu) - named for the triple-headed hell hound Cerberus that guards the gates of Hades. He often uses the dog to scare team members into running faster.


Ryokan Kurita
The largest and strongest player in the Deimon Devil Bats, Ryokan Kurita is a kind-hearted individual, and the only thing bigger than his body is his heart. He becomes Sena's second friend after entering Deimon High School. He is somewhat dim-witted, nearly giving away Sena's identity as Eyeshield 21, but is immediately silenced by Hiruma. When playing, Kurita shouts his kiai "Funnuraba!"(Here I come!) when exerting extra effort. His biggest dream is to compete in the Christmas Bowl.He lives in a temple with his father, who is the director of a Buddhist sect. His father believed that to grow up big and strong, a young boy had to eat a lot, thus overfeeding his son. Kurita, as his name would suggest, has a head shaped like a chestnut.

Mamori Anezaki
Sena's overprotective and motherly childhood friend. Mamori's mother met Sena's mother in a cooking class, and Mamori and Sena have been friends ever since. Mamori has been protecting Sena from bullies since primary school, to the point that Sena has grown up never having to stand up for himself. Mamori joined the American Football club to watch over Sena and prevent any bullying by the other members. Despite her 'joining the American Football club just to protect Sena's claim, she eventually becomes an excellent manager who knows the rules inside and out and makes up strategies for the team.
