Plot synopsis:
The story opens with the sudden appearance of Rukia Kuchiki in Ichigo Kurosaki's bedroom. She is surprised at his ability to see her, but their resulting conversation is interrupted by the appearance of a "hollow", an evil spirit. After Rukia is severely wounded while trying to protect Ichigo, she intends to transfer half her powers to Ichigo, hoping to give him the opportunity to face the hollow on equal footing. Ichigo unintentionally absorbs almost all her powers instead, allowing him to defeat the hollow with ease. The next day, Rukia appears in Ichigo's classroom as a transfer student. Much to his surprise, she appears to be a normal human. She theorizes that it was the unusual strength of Ichigo's spirit that caused him to absorb almost all her powers, thus leaving her stranded in the human world. Rukia has transferred herself into a gigai — an artificial human body — while waiting to recover her abilities. In the meantime, Ichigo must take over her job as a Shinigami (Soul Reaper), battling hollows and guiding lost souls to Soul Society.
Main characters:
Ichigo Kurosaki (Kurosaki Ichigo)
The primary protagonist. The series begins with Ichigo receiving Shinigami powers as a result of a run-in with Rukia Kuchiki, the Soul Reaper assigned to patrol Karakura Town. These powers come at the cost of Rukia's own, and as a result, Ichigo concedes to work as Rukia's stand-in, fighting to protect people from evil spirits called hollows and sending good spirits, pluses, to Soul Society. He is a 15-year-old who attempts to cultivate a detached image, for which he keeps his eyebrows constantly furrowed. Ichigo has natural orange hair, a fact that annoys many bullies in his school, who constantly pick fights with him. Ichigo claims that he does not care what others think and seems to enjoy fighting the bullies.
Rukia Kuchiki (Kuchiki Rukia)
Rukia is a Shinigami in the 13th Division under Jushiro Ukitake. Shortly after meeting the main protagonist of the series, Ichigo Kurosaki, who can see supernatural phenomena such as Shinigami she is forced to give him her powers in order to fulfill her duties as a Shinigami. Because of the amount of time she has spent with Ichigo, Rukia has been able to gain a keen understanding of his inner workings. She is as such always able to help him overcome his own self-doubts, showing him that he can and wants to complete a given task when he himself thinks otherwise. Rukia's relationship with Ichigo is unique, for despite the relatively short amount of time they have known each other, Ichigo can easily confide in her and considers her a true friend because she is encouraging and understands what he is feeling. By playing the part of a poor, innocent girl, Rukia is able to get others to side with her and otherwise focus their scrutiny on an unrelated topic so that her peculiar actions might go unnoticed.
Uryu Ishida (Ishida Uryu)
A classmate and companion of Ichigo Kurosaki and is introduced as the last Quincy. He is a black-haired, bespectacled teenager of average height, generally shy and quiet, but tries harder to act cool when other people are around. At school, Uryu wears the school uniform along with a tie, while outside he dons white Quincy clothes with blue stripes representing a Quincy cross, and a mantle. He is a good student and is sometimes seen as the slightly awkward nerdy type. He has an unusual interest in sewing, as he is in the crafts club at school, and makes excellent grades, coming in first place on exams.
Orihime Inoue (Inoue Orihime)
She is friendly, humorous, sensitive, and kind. She comes off as naive and rather clueless, which is at odds with her exceptionally high marks in school. Orihime has a tendency to rush into situations without thinking, sometimes leading to embarrassing consequences. At one point, the schoolgirls ask Rukia if she has feelings for Ichigo. When Rukia denies any such thing, Orihime is disappointed that Rukia does not share her sentiments, because if she had, then it would be two girls against one boy and therefore the girls "team" would win, which makes no sense.
Yasutora "Chad" Sado (Sado "Chado" Yasutora)
A teenager of Mexican descent. He is extremely tall and appears to be much older than he actually is. Chad is a quiet, but intelligent person and is sometimes the subject of jokes or bullies because he rarely fights back. To match his extraordinary size, Chad possesses extraordinary superhuman durability, even before activating his spiritual powers, being able to survive the impact of a falling steel girder on his back and a head-on motorcycle collision, and is strong enough to break telephone poles and wield them as giant clubs.
